What is Prostate-Specific Antigen?
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a glycoprotein released by the prostate gland. A Free PSA test evaluates the level of PSA that circulates unbound in the bloodstream. This helps doctors assess issues like prostate inflammation, enlargement, or possible tumor growth.
PSA levels may increase in conditions such as prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Tracking Free PSA is also helpful for identifying metastatic or long-standing prostate disease, especially in patients undergoing treatment. A rise in PSA after therapy may indicate that the condition has reappeared.
